Her black eyes were not very large, but held a charming liveliness and mischief.
Rosa's eyes get the same two nouns her whole character does — liveliness and mischief. Guimarães is efficient: this is not idle description but the tune of a personality, and the mischief will turn to malice once we learn what Leôncio did to her.
