The hinge word is 'positivo' — here not 'positive' in our sense but definite, concrete, a real grievance rather than a vague feeling. Envy plus a concrete wrong equals 'odio mortal.' The next sentences will supply the wrong: Rosa was Leôncio's cast-off lover, displaced by Isaura.
