The turn of Leôncio's appetite is told in a single verb — 'inclinou-se,' he leaned, inclined — and Rosa is discarded. She is a victim of the same predation as Isaura, one stage earlier, and the tragedy Guimarães sketches is that it makes her not a sister but an enemy: the abused turned tormentor.
