The pretty little mulatta felt herself cruelly wounded in her heart by that scorn,
For a moment the narrator's sympathy rests on Rosa. 'Ferida em seo coração' — wounded in her heart — grants that her jealousy grows from a real hurt, a genuine feeling betrayed. Guimarães will not make her a simple villain; her cruelty has a wound at the bottom of it.
