The overseer is the being most detested among the slaves;
The narrator now steps out of the scene to generalize — a favourite move of his — and states a hard social truth. Of all the figures on a plantation, it is the feitor, the overseer, who draws the purest hatred, because he is the hand that is always present and always striking.
