Here is Isaura's answer to every taunt: she claims no superiority at all. 'Não sou mais do que uma escrava como tu' — I am no more than a slave, like you. Where Rosa uses the master's category to wound, Isaura uses it to insist on kinship. It is the moral opposite of 'learn your place': she already knows her place, and it is beside Rosa, not above her.
