A note on this passage

Isaura declines without rancour. 'Não tenho fome nenhuma' — I have no hunger at all — is likely true and likely also a shield: the appetite of the grieving is small, and the wish to stay behind is a wish to be, for a moment, alone. She would rather spin than sit at the ration beside her tormentor.
