ha uma, que por inveja ou seja lá pelo que fôr, me olha de revés e só trata de achincalhar-me.
there is one who, out of envy or whatever it be, looks at me askance and does nothing but jeer at me.
Isaura is fair and generous even in her private grief: she will not swear to Rosa's motive, 'por inveja ou seja lá pelo que fôr,' out of envy or whatever it may be. The image 'olha de revés,' looks askance, sideways, catches the sly hostility exactly, and 'achincalhar,' to jeer, to make sport of, names the daily wearing-down she must endure from a fellow captive.
