Here, where among my companions, who seem to wish me well, I hoped to stay more at peace,
She had counted on the senzala as sanctuary — among 'parceiras' who 'me querem bem,' companions who wish her well. The hope was real, and the earlier scene bore it out: most of the women pity and defend her. The sentence sets up the one exception that has spoiled even this refuge.
