The setting

— Ah, my God! she murmured to herself. — Here we have a fresh nuisance!

A note on this passage

Her dread finds words. 'Ahi temos nova importunação' — here we have a fresh nuisance — the weary formula of someone for whom interruption is constant and unwelcome. 'Importunação,' importuning, is precisely the right word: the demand of one who has no right to demand but does so anyway, again and again.
