— Ah, so that's how it is! exclaimed André, all puffed up at this abrupt rebuff.
His vanity smarts. 'Enfunado' — swollen, puffed up, like a sail filled with wind — is the perfect word for wounded self-love, and 'brusco desengano,' the abrupt disenchantment, is his own word for being turned down flat. The comedy is that a page reacts to a slave's refusal as a courtier might to a duchess's snub.
