The setting

A note on this passage

Rejected, André turns to sarcasm — 'a senhora,' the lady, spat like Rosa's mock-honorific. He accuses her of preferring the 'finezas,' the gallantries, of the white 'moços bonitos' in the great house. It is the same jealous logic as Rosa's: her refusal must mean she holds herself above him, when in truth she wants none of them.
