The self-inventory is a comic aria of six past participles, a dandy cataloguing himself head to foot: cravated, gloved, shod, starched, braided, perfumed. For a page it is a livery of borrowed elegance, and the rush of adjectives — each a small vanity — paints André whole: a man wholly composed of his own turnout.
