The gesture's aim, half-guessed by the narrator: a secret word, 'ou talvez furtar-lhe um beijo,' or perhaps to steal a kiss. 'Furtar' — to steal, to filch — is exactly right: a kiss taken, not given, is a theft, and the verb quietly sides with Isaura, naming what André calls courtship as the small robbery it is.
