A note on this passage

The trespass itself. 'Desembaraçadamente' — freely, without any check or shame — is the awful word: he does it as if entitled, as if her body were simply there for the taking. That a slave woman's person could be handled so, by a fellow slave with no more right than his own boldness, is exactly the vulnerability the whole chapter has been circling.
