The setting

Within the house she counted four enemies, each more dogged than the last in robbing her of her soul's peace and torturing her heart:

A note on this passage

The narrator tallies her besiegers like a general counting a siege — 'quatro inimigos,' four enemies, within her own household. 'Porfiado,' dogged, persistent, catches the wearing quality of the pursuit: not one assault but a ceaseless erosion of 'a paz da alma,' the soul's peace. The colon opens onto the roll-call.
