The four are named, and the symmetry is grim: three men who want her body and one woman who wants her gone. 'Amantes' — would-be lovers — spans the master Leôncio, the grotesque gardener Belchior, and the page André, three ranks united by appetite; and against them the 'emula,' the rival Rosa, whose hatred completes the encirclement. Isaura stands alone at the centre of all four.
