— Where are the girls who usually work here?... Leôncio asked the overseer, on entering the hall.
Leôncio's first words are all business — 'onde estão as raparigas?,' where are the girls? — the master surveying his idle workroom. He does not yet see Isaura, and the question, ordinary as it is, keeps him in the register of ownership: the women are labour to be accounted for, present or absent at his word.
