A note on this passage

The overseer answers with a servant's deference — 'senhor,' sir — and a practical reassurance. The exchange is mundane, the running of an estate, and its very ordinariness is chilling: the machinery of the plantation clicks along, meals and work and returns, while its master's eye is about to fall on the one woman alone in the room.
