The setting

'This young master Leôncio... hmm!... God grant I'm wrong... it rather seems to me he'll make us long for old master's day.'

A note on this passage

The 'hmm' does more work than the words around it — a whole foreboding compressed into a grunt. She will not say outright what Leôncio is; she lets the pause and the wish 'God grant I'm wrong' carry it. The reader, who has seen him in Cap. VI, knows she is not wrong.
