As soon as the overseer withdrew, Leôncio made his way to Isaura's side.
The trap closes. The instant the overseer is gone — 'mal o feitor se retirou,' the moment he withdrew — Leôncio moves. The room he emptied by decree is now his; the witnesses he sent to the fields are gone; and he crosses to her, unhurried, certain. Everything the chapter has assembled narrows to this: a powerful man and a woman he owns, alone.
