The menace wears a tender face. Leôncio's voice is 'meiga e commovida,' soft and moved — the seducer's approach, not the tyrant's. It is more frightening for the gentleness: he can afford to be gentle, because everything else — the law, the whip, the emptied room — is already on his side. Softness, in the mouth of absolute power, is only another instrument.
