'and before long we'll all be off to the fields to swing the hoe from sun to sun, or to the coffee-grove to pick coffee, with the overseer's lash right at our backs.'
Joaquina lays out the future in one breathless line: the workroom traded for the field, the hoe 'from sun to sun,' the coffee-picking, and the lash always at the back. This is the real economy of the fazenda — coffee and the whip — behind the pastoral of the earlier chapters. The senzala knows exactly what is coming.
