Along the hall, facing wide railed windows onto the courtyard, sat a row of spinning-women.
The camera settles: a long line of women at the windows, the light of the courtyard behind them. It is almost a genre painting — the row of spinners — and Guimarães means us to look at them as individuals before the plot narrows to one.
