'More at ease?! Some hope!' cried a third. 'A thousand times rather here! Here at least one is always free of the accursed overseer.'
A third woman answers flatly: the field's small freedom is a fantasy, because the field means the overseer, and the overseer is the true daily terror. The debate resolves not on the work but on the man with the whip — which is exactly where the chapter is heading, since the feitor is about to walk in.
