'Juliana was a girl of pride, and so she had to suffer, right up to her death.'
Here is the heart of it: Juliana suffered 'because she was a girl of pride' — because she refused the master. Her dignity is precisely what condemned her. The sentence is an indictment of the whole arrangement, in which a woman's virtue and her destruction are the same act. It is also the fate Isaura has chosen for herself.
