A note on this passage

Rosa's charge is the classic resentment of the field-slave for the house-slave — that Isaura holds herself above them. There may be a grain of truth in it (Isaura is set apart), but the narrator has already shown us her humility at the wheel; the accusation is really Rosa's own wound, dressed as class solidarity.
