The setting

'Poor Mr. Miguel!.. he hasn't a scrap of ground to drop dead on, and he's to find money to free his daughter!'

A note on this passage

Even her mock-pity is a barb: penniless Miguel, 'nowhere to drop dead,' presuming to buy his daughter free. Rosa sneers at the very love the chapter honours. But the jeer accidentally states the tragedy straight — a destitute father is the only thing standing between Isaura and the fate of her mother.
