'What harm did poor Isaura ever do you, that dove without gall,
'A dove without gall' — the image redeems Isaura in a phrase: gentle, harmless, incapable of the spite now aimed at her. Against Rosa's 'impostor,' Joaquina sets the dove, and the moral gap between the two women is drawn as plainly as the colour-line was earlier. The old woman sees clearly who is wronging whom.
