Rosa bit her lips in spite, and was about to answer with all the impudence and swagger natural to her,
Rosa, stung, gathers herself to fire back — 'all the impudence and swagger natural to her.' The narrator lets us feel the retort coming, the scene tightening toward a real fight, so that the interruption in the next breath lands like a slammed door. The senzala's small drama is about to be crushed by a larger power.
