The setting

He was followed by a young mulatto, slim and dandified, wearing a handsome page's livery and carrying a spinning-wheel.

A note on this passage

Behind the brute comes the dandy — the pajem André, 'slim and dandified' in his fine livery, carrying the very wheel that will chain Isaura to the room. The pretty servant and the wheel arrive together, and the detail is quietly cruel: the instrument of her demotion is delivered by the next man who will pester her.
