A broad-shouldered, square-built man, with a thick black beard and a hard, repellent face, appears at the hall door and comes in. It was the overseer.
Francisco arrives in the flesh, and the portrait is all threat: broad, square, black-bearded, 'hard and repellent.' Guimarães paints him as pure brute mass, the physical opposite of the delicate women he commands. After tia Joaquina named him 'the worst plague,' the body confirms the verdict.
