A note on this passage

The metaphor is military: Malvina's departure 'lhe abandonava o campo inteiramente livre de embaraços' — yielded him the field wholly clear of obstacles. She was the last impediment, the one restraint (as the narrator soon says, Isaura's 'salva-guarda'). With her gone, the battlefield is his, and only the defenceless Isaura remains.
