The narrator names the aim without euphemism: 'nefandos projetos' — heinous, unspeakable designs — upon 'a infeliz Isaura,' the hapless Isaura. 'Nefando,' literally that which must not be spoken, is the book's harshest word of condemnation, and it strips away every pretext Leôncio dressed his refusal in. What he wants is plainly, nameably evil.
