A note on this passage

'Pouco caso' — making little of a thing, treating it as beneath notice — names the exact register of his performance. It was 'fingido,' feigned, and it worked: it 'disfarçava' his real 'prazer e satisfação.' The show of caring nothing is precisely the mask for caring, in the worst way, a great deal.
