The narrator dates Isaura's despair precisely to the letter of Chapter VI — the news of old Almeida's death. For Malvina and Leôncio that death rearranged a fortune; for Isaura it removed the one authority whose promise might have freed her. The same event that loosed Leôncio's 'last fetters' snapped shut Isaura's last hope.
