The cruelty of the timing is caught in one image: Miguel's arrival with the ransom had made hope 'desabrochar,' bud and blossom, in Isaura's heart, only for the very same hour to kill it. 'Lisongeiras' — flattering, coaxing — hints those hopes were always fragile, tempting her to a joy fate would not allow. The flower opens and is cut in a single day.
