Her 'imaginação abalada' — a mind shaken off its foundations by fear — can conceive 'outro remedio' none. The word 'remedio,' remedy, frames her plight almost as an illness with no cure; every avenue of hope has closed. The hopelessness is total precisely because she has already tried, through her father and Malvina, and watched each door shut.
