'Or I leave his house'

Se por estes dias não der liberdade e um destino qualquer a Isaura, não ficarei mais nem um momento em sua casa.
If in these days he does not give Isaura her freedom and some settled future, I will not stay a moment longer in his house.
The ultimatum in full: freedom for Isaura and 'um destino qualquer,' some secured future for her, or Malvina walks. It is a striking moment — a wife staking her marriage on the liberation of a slave — and it measures Malvina's decency. But it also seals Isaura's peril, for it forces Leôncio to choose between his wife and his prey, and the chapter has already told us which way his 'abominaveis instinctos' will pull him.
