After the quarrel, of which Isaura was the innocent cause, Rosa became Malvina's chambermaid or lady's-maid,
The plot's machinery clicks into place. Isaura was the 'causa innocente' — the innocent cause — of the rupture, guilty of nothing but being desired. And by an irony of the household, Rosa, her enemy, is installed as Malvina's 'mucama,' her chambermaid, the servant closest to her person. Proximity is opportunity: the one who hates Isaura most now has daily access to the ear of the one whose love Isaura most needs.
