The narrator excuses Malvina a second time, this time by youth: 'candida e inexperiente,' guileless and inexperienced, she has no defence against calculated malice. 'Desvairar' — to unhinge, lead astray — measures the effect: the slander does not merely persuade her, it unsettles her judgement. Her very virtues, candour and innocence, are what leave her open to the lie.
