The campaign works by accumulation — 'forão produzindo o resultado,' it went on producing the result, slowly, over days. Rosa is named 'a perversa mulatinha,' the perverse little mulatta; the diminutive and the racial term belong to the narrator's 1875 idiom, and the moral weight falls on 'perversa,' her willed cruelty. The estrangement of Malvina from Isaura is no accident but the achieved aim of a patient enemy — and it strips Isaura of her last human shield just as the master closes in.
