The paragraph ends on the three-fold horror of Isaura's position, packed into three nouns: Leôncio is 'seo senhor, amante e algoz ao mesmo tempo' — her master, her would-be lover, and her executioner, all at once. The roles are monstrous precisely because combined: the one who owns her also desires her and will kill her for refusing. There is no appeal outward, because the tyrant, the suitor, and the hangman are one man. The chapter has stated the trap; now it will spring.
