Indeed, no sooner had Leôncio seen his wife vanish behind the last hill,
The action snaps taut with the adverb 'mal' — scarcely, no sooner. The instant Malvina disappears 'por trás da ultima collina,' behind the last hill, the leash is off. The hill that hides her also marks the boundary of Isaura's protection: while the carriage was in sight there was still a witness; past the crest, none. The whole chapter has been counting down to this line.
