A note on this passage

The tableau of the found victim: 'estendida por terra quasi exanime, banhada em pranto' — stretched on the floor almost lifeless, bathed in weeping. 'Exanime,' literally without breath or soul, shows how far grief has emptied her; she is prostrate, drowned in her own tears. The image is of complete defencelessness, the hare gone still under the shadow.
