A note on this passage

'Deparar com' — to come upon, chance upon — has an air of the hunter flushing his quarry. He finds her 'no escuro recanto de uma alcova,' the dark corner of a bedchamber, run to earth in the last shadow. The darkness that should have hidden her instead frames her helplessness. The predator has cornered the hare.
