It is true that Leôncio did not fail to feel a certain shock, a certain surprise — though not a painful blow — at the news of his father's passing;
The narrator is scrupulously fair, and the precision is damning. Leôncio felt 'choque' and 'sorpresa' — shock and surprise — but pointedly 'que não golpe doloroso,' not a painful blow. The distinction is exact: he was startled, as anyone is by sudden death, but not grieved. A son who is surprised by his father's death, and not wounded by it, is being quietly indicted.
