The narrator braces the reader for an ugly truth — 'força é dizel-o,' it must be said, one has no choice but to say it. Below the reflexive shock, once 'abalo e consternação,' the tremor and dismay of the first hour, faded, something colder surfaced. The reluctant honesty of the aside makes the revelation land harder.
