The bribes escalate: 'esplendidas promessas' and 'solemnes protestos,' splendid promises and solemn vows. There is a bitter irony in 'solemnes' — the same word used earlier for the 'promessa solemne' to free Isaura, which he broke. He is lavish with vows he does not mean, to a woman who wants nothing he offers. Wealth and words, the only currencies he trusts, are spent in vain.
