From there she would have to be taken to the fields, from the fields to the stocks,
The narrator lays out the ladder of punishment as an inexorable descent, each rung a real instrument of slavery's cruelty. First 'a roça,' the fields — the brutal manual labour of the cane. Then 'o tronco,' the stocks, in which the enslaved were clamped and immobilized. The chained construction — from the fields to the stocks, and on — makes the progression sound like a machine, one station feeding the next, with Isaura fed into its top.
